We are often asked whether a new tattoo can be put over the place of a removed tattoo. The short answer is yes, but there are some things to keep in mind when covering this sensitive area.
You have a variety of options when it comes to tattoo removal. You are able to completely remove it (a full removal), remove just a section of it (a selective removal), or just fade it enough to make it easier to cover up with a new tattoo. No matter what option you choose, your skin will be able to hold a tattoo with no major issues, but it requires some additional time and consideration before you hop back under the needle.
It is suggested that you wait at least 6-8 weeks before having the treated area tattooed over again. This is to ensure that your skin is completely healed and healthy before you pierce it with more ink.
Waiting is crucial to prevent your skin from rejecting the tattoo ink, causing it to become splotchy. Even small areas of scar tissue can pose a few challenges for a new tattoo. The skin surface will be uneven, and the ink will not disperse itself in the same manner.
Also, it is important to realize that scar tissue may rest on your nerve endings, which means tattoos performed across scar tissue are often more painful than standard tattoos on untreated skin. That said, it is not any more painful than laser treatments and you were able to sit through that! Either way you may have a different experience entirely when you choose to get a tattoo over scar tissue from a removal.
These are all things to consider when you are getting a tattoo in the first place. If you aren’t sure you will want it forever, you should rethink getting it permanently placed on your body.
